U.S. Sanctions on Russia Begin to Bite.

"Russian markets took another knock Friday as sanctions imposed by the U.S. over the annexation of Crimea began to hit oligarchs and their businesses. 
Moscow's MICEX index fell more than 2% -- taking its losses for the year to 14%. The ruble was steady, after dipping early in the day, but has still lost about 10% since the start of the year.

There are 4 different types of vegetarian to choose from, depending on your requirements and what you would like or be able to give up will decide on which one you become. Some might go all-out vegan while other people still like to drink milk or eat cheese or eggs. Here are the main types of vegetarian diets:

The Lacto Vegetarians - This is a no animal product diet such as no eggs but they will eat dairy products like cheese and milk.

The Ovos - You can eat eggs but no other animal products, including diary such as milk or cheese.
The Lacto-Ovos - While no meat is allowed you can eat diary such as cheese or milk, eggs are fine too.

The Vegans - A vegan does not eat ANY animal based products, this includes eggs, milk, cheese etc. Short: Only plants are allowed.

You can make your decision based on your own preferences - say you still want to be able to eat diary such as yoghurt, milk or cheese. If so the Lacto is for you! Ovo will be for you if you want to be able to eat eggs..

Look at it that way: "You Are What You Eat" - did you ever hear this old saying? You definitely are what you eat and there can be no doubt about it.

This saying is honestly true, look at it like this: You eat a McDonald's, your blood sugar levels will go through the roof as will your blood pressure. By eating such foods your health and wellbeing will suffer greatly.

As doctors of who have wide experience of lifestyle medicine say: Genes load the gun: lifestyle pulls the trigger.

Lifestyle includes what we take into our bodies and how we use them. What we take into our bodies includes what we eat and drink and smoke, and all drugs, whether medicinal or recreational, and even the air we breathe. How we use our bodies involves all our physical activities, including how we exercise and rest.

Lifestyle includes what we take into our minds and how we use them. Diseases can be caused by any number of factors including environment, genetics, and general lifestyle. In a nutshell, choose healthy food and drink. Take healthy exercise. Avoid poisons, cultivate cheerful, thankful frame of mind.

Cleanliness Promotes Good Health

One of the most important things we can do for our own benefit is to maintain our health. A person in good health is in good state of mind. One of the measures we can do to keep the body in good health is ensure cleanliness and personal hygiene. HYGIENE "is a set of practices that are conducive to the preservation of health, such as cleanliness" (Sorensen & Lukemann, 1994,p. 892). Cleanliness is therefore an essential tool to maintain both our personal hygiene and environmental hygiene.

Disease like diarrhoea, cold, hepatitis can be prevented if only one maintains good personal hygiene. Caring of the hands and feet, mouth care, hair wash and bathing are good measures to help maintain one in a good state of health. Some essential measures to ensure personal cleanliness are; washing your hands regularly, bathing often (can be twice a day- recommended), do not walk barefoot, brush your teeth regularly, check your hairs for lice and other insects.

Ensuring cleanliness in the home cannot be ignored in maintaining our health. You cannot maintain personal hygiene and live out environmental hygiene if one wants to be in good state of health. Cleanliness at the home requires; keeping animals clean, cleaning up waste, avoiding spitting inside, covering your mouth when coughing, ensuring cleanliness of food and water, covering food, washing fruits and vegetables before use, burning garbage.

Cleanliness therefore requires personal and environmental hygiene. God expects us to keep our body clean and in good state. He demonstrated cleanliness when he washed the disciple’s feet during the Lord’s Supper. He poured water into the washbasin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to dry them with the towel He had wrapped around Himself. (John 13:5 [NET]).

The Bible tells us that our body is the temple of the Lord. As we cannot go to an uncleaned temple to worship, so are we to cleanse our body. Cleanliness is next to godliness. The LORD commanded us to obey all these statutes and to revere him so that it may always go well for us and he may preserve us, as he has to this day. (Deut 6:24 [NET]).

Bible’s Perspective about Vegetarianism

A writer argued against belief in God. He believed only in the real world, only in real things. He said, “Man is what he eats. Period.”

What he said may be going too far, but he does have a point. It is true that we are more than what we eat, but what we eat helps make us what we are. Our blood, bones, fat, and tissues all are fed by the food we put in our bodies. We know that if we stopped eating, we would die. We know, too, that our food influences our bodies in many ways. Anyone who has ever eaten too much, or eaten the wrong things and become sick, knows how much food influences our bodies and minds. Diet can influence our thoughts, which should come as no surprise. This is because our brain is central to thought. And our brain is influenced by the foods that feed it.

Science shows that a vegetarian diet is healthier than a diet high in meat and full of fat. The Adventist Health Study, done by Loma Linda University, compared Seventh-day Adventist church members in the United States who share almost the same lifestyles except for diet. One group of people ate a lacto-ovo vegetarian diet (plant food plus eggs and milk).They were compared with another group of Seventh-day Adventists who eat red and white meats in their diet. The study shows that the vegetarians had less heart disease, less types of cancers, less hypertension (high blood pressure), less diabetes, less dementia, and less osteoporosis (bone weakness).The study also shows that the Seventh-day Adventist vegetarians enjoyed additional healthy years of life by eating more whole grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes, and nuts. They also ate less refined grain products, sugar, and prepared foods. Other studies done in Europe, Australia, and South America support these findings.

As Christians we should not forget the fact that the first sin of humankind was due to appetite. Adam and Eve were told not to eat of a certain tree (Genesis 2:16, 17).But they ate of it anyway (Genesis 3:6).This was sin, pure and simple. We must be careful not to make an idol (false god) out of diet. But we also must not think that proper diet is not important. From so many voices, we need wisdom to find the right balance in how we should eat and drink. The Flood destroyed all vegetables and plant life on the earth. So God gave humans permission to eat animals. What a great change in the whole balance of relationship between people and animals. We are so used to it today that we surely do not fully understand what a terribly great change this must have been. “So eat and drink and do everything else for the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31, NIrV).

Obesity promotes Liver Cancer development through the Gut Microbiome

Obesity has been a growing health concern across the world. Obesity can make one more susceptible to developing all kinds of diseases: heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, and also cancer: all kinds of cancers. But exactly HOW obesity increases your chances of getting cancer is not entirely clear.

So what if we could understand what aspects of obesity contribute to a specific cancer in order to prevent the development of cancer in obese individuals and treat obesity independently while learning something about our own biology?

The scientists of this paper wanted to understand if and how obesity contributes to cancer.

Their findings are published in their article titled “Obesity-induced gut microbial metabolite promotes liver cancer through senescence secretome”, published in Nature in July 2013 by the Ohtani lab at the Japanese Foundation for Cancer Research.

In order to do this, the scientists fed either obese mice a high fat diet or lean mice a normal diet, and examined the development of liver cancer. Diet alone was not sufficient to cause cancer but when this treatment was combined with a cancer-inducing chemical, 100% of obese mice fed a high fat diet developed cancer, compared to only 5% of lean mice fed a normal diet.

But the question is: Is this due to the fact that the mice were obese or o the fact that they were eating a high fat diet? 

To answer this question, the scientists looked at mice that were obese due to changes in their DNA sequence, but that ate a normal diet. These mice were also more likely to develop cancer with the cancer-causing chemical than non-obese mice. So this suggests that obesity can promote the development of liver cancer when a trigger, in this case a cancer-causing chemical, was provided. So what could explain this?

The scientists noticed that the cells around the tumor were producing lots of molecules that promote cancer. These cells were in a state of arrest that we call “senescence”. When the senescent cells or the molecules they secrete were removed, obesity did not cause mice to develop cancer in the presence of the cancer-causing chemical. So this suggests that obesity is somehow making the cells in the liver senescent and causing them to produce all kinds of pro-cancer compounds.

So the next question is, how can obesity affect the state of cells in the liver?

To answer this question, the scientists looked at the intestine. Our intestine is full of microbes, including bacteria that form communities that play important roles in our health. Some bacteria are important in promoting health of the intestine, while others can be detrimental.

The scientists found that obesity can greatly influence the types of bacteria that live in our intestine. Lets say for example that obese mice have more red bacteria in their intestine Than lean mice that have more green bacteria. So they wondered if the different bacterial communities in obese vs. lean mice could influence biology in the liver and explain the fact that obesity promotes liver cancer.

But how could something in the intestine influence the liver? 

Well it turns out that bacteria produce byproducts that leave the intestine, enter the circulation, and travel directly to the liver. So the scientists wondered if bacteria from obese mice produced different byproducts than bacteria from lean mice.

Well, it turns out that bacteria from obese mice produce lots of DCA, a compound that damages cells and can even cause colon and liver cancer! That’s a very interesting finding!! When the scientists reduced levels of DCA or removed the bacteria from the intestines of obese mice, these mice no longer formed tumors in the presence of the cancer-causing chemical.

So what did this study show?

First, this study shows that obesity can promote liver cancer development.

Second, the scientists take this a step further to describe a mechanism by which this can happen. It goes like this: Obesity alters the types of bacteria that reside in the intestine. Now, obese mice have more red bacteria and fewer green bacteria. These red bacteria produce lots of DCA, which enters the bloodstream and travels to the liver. In the liver, DCA causes liver cells to enter a state of arrest, or “senescence”.

These senescent cells in turn produce compounds which promote liver cancer development in the presence of a trigger, in this case the cancer-causing chemical given to the mice. So the scientists have come full circle starting from their interesting discovery in the liver that took them all the way to the intestine and back to provide a theory that explains how obesity could promote liver cancer.

So what does this mean for you? 

This study shows that obesity can influence liver cancer and has broader implications than initially thought. Of course, it still remains to be seen if this result stands in humans. I’d also like to find out if DCA produced by intestinal bacteria could be causing cancer directly without acting through senescent cells in the liver.

It would also be interesting to find out HOW the microbiome changes over time as one becomes obese, and why? Is it because of the food that we eat? Is it because of a general state of body-wide inflammation? 

Overall we should take away that it’s important to live healthy lives. What we eat and how we treat ourselves influences biology all over our bodies. So as you can tell, scientists are studying cancer not only at the organ level but at the organism level. By trying to understand how biology in one organ can influence biology in another, we are developing powerful tools to understand our complex physiology and tackle these resilient diseases. Cell Phones Cause Cancer?

Some of you will recall the story a few months ago that cell phones had been linked to a type of brain cancer. It made the rounds for several days, was a popular topic of news blogs and discussion forums. But why hasn't there been any followup? Well, actually there has been, but only in research circles, and it's not too surprisingly reversed the previous discovery.

It appears that the prior evidence was overstated. Cell phones may yet be demonstrated to increase the risk of certain cancers, but the key point is that no research has reliably demonstrated this.

This is so typical and expected, at least expected by me, that it can serve as a useful lesson in skepticism of media reporting of science stories. It can also serve as an example of the difference between evidence based medicine and science based medicine. When the initial story hit, the coverage was very focused on authority figures and agency statements, which is typical of this kind of reporting. For more discussion of this phenomenon, I refer you to my video version of Ben Goldacre's essay on Bad Science journalism.

The World Health Organization put cell phones on the list of possible carcinogens, alongside such things as dry cleaning and artificial sweeteners. The level of evidence was ranked very low, which to a scientist puts it on a sort of global "to-do" list of promising research leads, but it was hardly a definitive identification of risk. That takes verification and a different type of analysis.

Let's go over the types of studies that scientists use to establish correlations. My goal is that the next time you're presented with these kinds of shocking discoveries, you'll be able to determine what kind of evidence it's based on.

The first two are a type of epidemiology, retrospective and prospective studies:

1. The retrospective cohort study In vastly simplified terms, grab 1000 people with disease A and compare them to 1000 people with no disease A. Identify factors that may be correlated with a higher risk for disease. The biggest problem with a retrospective study is what is called self-selection bias. Your experimental, "sick" group are already diagnosed with a disease, and because they already have the disease, whatever is the risk factor has already happened. It's very easy to misidentify confounding factors.

If you look at the 1000 people in the cancer group and find that 721 of them are heavy cell phone users, while only 614 of the non-cancer group are, how strong is that evidence, considering all the other possible reasons for the differences?

2. The prospective cohort study Take 1000 people, and follow them for a defined period of time. Document disease outcomes (did the people get brain cancers?), try to identify which risk factors were most predictive of the outcome. This is the retrospective study, but done in advance of the condition being studied. Did the highest quartile of meat-eaters get more gastric cancer, did the lowest exercisers develop more diabetes?

The populations are often heterogenous (or complex), and what looks like a simple association can often be a linked series of categories, like finding people who use cell phones to be at higher risk of neural-derived cancer, when the actual association may be with something about their income or profession or other environmental factor or genetic factor. It could be a multifactorial linkage where stress and urbanization plus better medical care is responsible for the increase, and cell phone use is really just a proxy.

3. Case-control trials In a case-control RCT, or randomized control trial, the researcher gets to control a lot more about the comparisons being made. You can take humans or non-human animals and mix them up until the populations are evenly randomized, then expose half the group to the experimental factor... that eliminates the self-selection and the confounding bias, because the researchers are intervening artificially.

This type of study is not always an option for ethical reasons. We choose not to expose humans to excessive risk if we can help it. This is a big improvement over purely epidemiological studies, but it also has some weaknesses. We still have the multifactorial problem, where multiple behaviors can be linked, and it's very difficult to untangle all the variables of genetics, environment, nutrition, case history, and sheer luck. There could still be a crazy mixture of lots of risks. Which is why we need...

4. Mechanistic research This is the kind of work that I've mostly done. The scientist, guided by less precise observational or epidemiological data, and complementing the experimentally rigorous case-control data, look for ways that the experimental factor could cause the correlated effect. This is usually done in some format that allows for almost complete control. Identical, clonal cells grown in identical flasks, transgenic mice, or sibling animals. Even within this category there are shades of resolution. Molecular biology is usually pretty good at sensitive and reproducible results.

Very small margins of error, and results that can be reproduced by different labs or different techniques.

We focus on something called method concordance, which is where I take my username. Arriving at the same conclusion by multiple independent lines of inquiry... In the case of cell phones, we'd need to identify a plausible and testable way that the radiation or heat or emotional cues associated with cell phones can interefere with normal cellular development. We'd attempt to replicate that finding in the simplified model of genetically identical animals or cell culture.

If the mechanistic outcomes contradict the prospective study, then the smart money is on the more rigorous lab research, less on the epidemiology. Notice how we've gone from the very complex and poorly controlled to the very tightly controlled and rigorous design. That doesn't mean the mechanistic research is better than a prospective study. After all, it would take a very long time to test all the possible hypotheses, and prospective studies provide great clues about what's worth further investigation.

The problem arises when epidemiological data is presented as confirmed fact, rather than the first step in a long process. I also often see a sort of reverse: mechanistic data on some new drug that shows that it can cure cancer or other disease in a flask of cells, or some poor mouse with a gutful of injected cancer cells, is touted as a major breakthrough in cancer research before it goes out to a control trial and then on to prospective studies.

None of these studies is without merit, and they add up to a total picture of the real underlying causality.

How do we differentiate between Evidence based medicine and Science Based Medicine?

Evidence based medicine is any medical practice which is based on a preponderance of evidence for its efficacy and safety. Science based medicine is a subclass of EBM. It includes only those practices that we can understand to a finer degree. We know that they're effective, but we also understand WHY they're effective. The mechanisms are clear enough to us that we can understand how best to use them in the clinic, when they might not be effective, and what improvements can be made to improve efficacy and safety.

Key to distinguishing the two is that we have more than just evidence that something causes an improvement, we can evaluate that epidemiological data in light of a plausible mechanism. For example, laetrile, a popular alternative cancer treatment derived from the cyanide-like compounds found in peach pits, is well characterized in terms of chemical structure and bioactivity.

It possesses no properties that would make it a good cancer drug. We can predict that with some confidence. However, it has a long and storied history with quack medicine of the mid-1920's, and so when evaluated in randomized control trials, sometimes it show evidence of effectiveness, and sometimes it doesn't. It depends on the power of the test and who's running it.

Laetrile might be considered evidence based medicine, albeit very, very weak evidence. It is not, however science based medicine, because there is absolutely nothing about how it acts in the body that would make it effective. Cases like laetrile, chelation therapy for heart disease or autism, or vitamin supplements are sometimes indicated by evidence, but not by a deep evidence of mechanisms.

So, returning to the example of cell phones, a big challenge is the lack of mechanism. The amount of radiation given off by modern cell phones is too small to reliably damage DNA or cross-link proteins. There's never been a good, well controlled study on cells that was able to replicate the effect suggested by prospective or retrospective epidemiological studies.

This makes scientists a little hesitant to jump behind a single study of a type that is notorious for false associations and lacks rigorous experimental control. Now, there is no process to show that something does NOT cause cancer, that's simply an untestable hypothesis in practical terms. However, how does a proper skeptic view the outcomes of these contradictory studies? Simple. With an open mind, and a rational estimate of risks.

We don't have to cast our vote for guilty or not guilty before the trial is finished. Like good jurors, we can wait until all the evidence is in. That's what rational skepticism is all about: withholding judgment until sufficient evidence is presented to accept or reject a given hypothesis. We understand this when we're in the jury box, but forget it the moment we step out of the courtroom.

It's more than a coincidence that so many scientists are skeptics and rationalists. The process becomes a way of life, a way of thinking, and a way of viewing the world. Secondhand Smoke and Lung Cancer

About 160,000 people die of lung cancer each year. About 85 to 90% of that cancer can be attributed to active smoking. The other 10-15% are caused by factors other than active smoking.

If we took lung cancer in never smokers, the term for people who never smoked, it would represent 16 to 24 thousand deaths per year, a major cause of cancer death. It's not something we should overlook.

Why do never smokers develop lung cancer? Well, for a sizable proportion we aren't quite sure what the risk factors were, but for at least part of the cases, we can positively link it to known and suspected carcinogens in the air. Particularly radon, second hand smoke and indoor air pollutants. There are also differences in the rates between men and women, with women never smokers slightly more likely to develop lung cancer, although that may be simply a matter of the relatively higher longevity of women.

What I'm really interested in, in this short video, is the risk increase from second-hand smoke. It's a topic that's been of interest since we first realized that smoking was causing major increases in lung cancer. A series of major studies have only very recently verified that second hand smoke in the home, in the workplace and in public places directly contributes to lung cancer risk in never smokers. I'm going to present just some very basic results from two of these reviews, one published in Clinical Cancer Research in September of 2011 and the other in the International Journal of Cancer published in 2004.

These effects are dose dependent almost right down to the very lowest exposure. That is, unlike a lot of other carcinogens, there is no known safe level of exposure to second hand smoke that causes no extra health risk.

It's an additive effect. Before I go any further I need to clear up one possible misconception. Active smoking carries a much higher risk of lung cancer than passive smoking or second hand smoke. An active smoker might be 10 to 20 times more likely to develop lung cancer than a never smoker, depending on a lot of factors. The 30% lung cancer increase is relatively small by comparison, but still represents a major health risk.

Going back to the paper, data from the National Human Activity Pattern Survey showed that in exposed never-smokers as a group, that 43% of that exposure is in the home, 7% in the workplace, 9% in a vehicle, and 15% in a bar or restaurant.

The second paper found that, in two very large case-control studies pooled together between the US and European populations, long-term exposure to workplace second hand smoke increased lung cancer risk by 25% where long-term exposure at home increased risk by 23%. Social exposure in bars, restaurants and in cars likewise increased risks by about 26%. This may be an underestimate. Other, similar reviews of large populations found between 25 and 45% increases.

When we look at the comprehensive US statistics, the range of people who die from lung cancer as a result of someone else smoking is probably between 3000 and 5000 people per year as of 2003. If we express that as a fraction of the total number of lung cancer deaths in never smokers, we come up with a number between 20 and 50% of all lung cancer deaths in never smokers being attributable to second hand smoke.

Ingredients: 

(crust)

2 containers of raw, unsalted pecans

1/2 teaspoon of salt

2 tablespoons of coconut oil

1/4 container of soft dates, pitted

1 teaspoon of vanilla concentrate

(Filling) 

6 little apples, peeled and cored

1/2 glass of pitted dates

2 teaspoons of coconut oil

2 teaspoons of vanilla concentrate

2 teaspoons of cinnamon powder

2 teaspoons of ground flaxseed powder

(Topping) 

2 medium sized green pieces of apples

Instructions: 

For the outside layer, mix the pecans and salt in the nourishment processor until coarse (thick not fine).

Beat in coconut oil, dates and vanilla concentrate until consolidated.

Press the outside mixture around the sides and lower part of a parchment lined 9 inch tart dish.

Place the outside in the cooler until required.
